On Tuesday. 35 year old Anthony Knowles, of Shamokin, Pennsylvania was returned to Maryland after being arrested in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Knowles was arrested after Pennsylvania law enforcement authorities discovered an open warrant from Maryland for his arrest while having contact with him after being called about a suspicious vehicle Knowles was driving.
On 12/17/2014 the Cumberland Police responded to Decatur Street in Cumberland for a report of numerous gunshots being fired. When Officers arrived they discovered several shell casings on the sidewalk in the 200 block. Police were unable to find any victims or suspects at that time.
Investigators with the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I) responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. Numerous interviews were conducted in the neighborhood. Those interviews led to the identity of the suspect and three victims.
The interviews of witnesses revealed that Knowles had been involved in an argument with three individuals. At some point during the confrontation, Knowles produced a handgun and began firing at the three victims. None of the victims were struck. The victims all fled on foot while Knowles entered a vehicle fled the scene. Investigators later learned that he had fled the area as well.
As a result, C3I Investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Knowles charging him with three counts of Attempted 2nd Degree Murder, three counts of 1st Degree Assault, three counts of 2nd Degree Assault, three counts of Reckless Endangerment, and related charges.
Knowles was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an initial appearance. He is currently incarcerated at the Allegany County Detention Center on $2.5 million bond pending his next court appearance.
