No shortage of applicants for the vacant Cumberland City Council seat with the deadline for letters of interest today. A seat opened last month when David Caporale resigned his position, just weeks after being elected as a member of the board of Allegany County Commissioners. Following today’s deadline the current mayor and council will review the applicants and schedule interviews. Mayor-elect Ray Morriss is expected to take an active role in the process, with the goal being to have a decision made prior to the January swearing in of the new council. As of late Thursday afternoon, at least 11 letters of interest had been submitted according to sources. Former candidates for city office, John Fetchero, David Smith and Buck Taylor are among those known to have an interest as well as local political activist Kelly Lorraine Swick Robertson.
