The Office of the State’s Attorney for Allegany County, the Honorable Michael O. Twigg, State’s Attorney, announced on Tuesday, that Candice Marie Hockman, 33 of Cumberland, was convicted in Allegany County Circuit Court of First Degree Burglary. The Honorable W. Timothy Finan sentenced Hockman to ten years incarceration, five years of which was suspended. The investigation revealed that the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office received information in early September 2014 that a home was to be burglarized in the Barton area. Deputies were able to determine when and where the home invasion would take place. After making the homeowners aware of the threat and securing them in another location, video surveillance was set up in the home, while deputies initiated visual surveillance outside. Hockman arrived at the home in the early morning hours of September 12, committed the burglary and upon her exit, was confronted and arrested by the deputies. Found in Hockman’s possession at the time of her arrest were marked twenty dollar bills placed inside the residence as part of the law enforcement operation. According to Assistant State’s Attorney Erich Bean, who prosecuted the case, “This is an excellent example of local law enforcement being proactive, able to catch a burglar in the act. Ms. Hockman will have a lot of time to think about her actions and their consequences. The emotional toll burglary takes on victims, unable to feel secure in their homes, leaves long lasting effects. Burglary cannot be tolerated in our community.”
The case was investigated by the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office. Hockman was represented by James Elliott, Esq, of the Public Defender’s Office.
