It was with great enthusiasm in October of 2014 that local businessman Craig Knippenberg announced plans to bring auto racing back to the Allegany County Fairgrounds after a two year hiatus- but indications are now that those plans are dead. Knippenberg had originally hoped to start the races at a newly renovated Cumberland Speedway in the spring and summer of 2015- however delays in track upgrades derailed those plans. Citing a number of hurdles that prevent a return to successful dirt racing to the Fairgo Half Mile, Cumberland Speedway Inc. and Allegany County government have agreed to cancel their plans to work together in reviving racing events at the Allegany County Fairgrounds.
Without new interest and participation from an established racing promoter within the region, Cumberland Speedway and Allegany County have agreed to abandon joint efforts to promote fairgrounds races for the foreseeable future.
