On August 1, 2019, an officer on patrol in the area of Baltimore Ave observed red passenger car traveling on the wrong side of the roadway in the area of Baltimore Ave and I-68. The officer pulled behind the vehicle and activated his emergency lights in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop. The vehicle then accelerated in an attempt to elude police continuing onto Willowbrook Rd and then turning onto Pine Ave. The officer was able to observe the vehicle registration plate and was advised that the vehicle was reported stolen from Williams Street earlier in the day. The suspect vehicle continued on Pine Ave and then turned onto Central Ave. An officer traveling on Central Ave to assist was nearly struck head on by the fleeing vehicle. The officer was able to maneuver his vehicle out of the direct path of the fleeing vehicle, but not before the fleeing vehicle struck the officers vehicle, causing minimal damage. The suspect vehicle continued to flee toward the area of Park Street and ultimately came to a stop at Central Ave and Park Street after traveling the wrong way on Central Ave from Maryland Ave. The operator of the vehicle was identified as 19 year old Alexander Geovanni Fonseca of Miami, Florida. After a brief struggle, Fonseca was placed under arrest and transported to the Cumberland Police Department. The vehicle was removed from the area of Central Ave and also taken to the Cumberland Police Department for processing. Fonseca was charged with numerous criminal and traffic charges. Fonseca was also found to have three outstanding Arrest Warrants through Miami, Florida. Fonseca was taken to the District Court Commissioner’s Office for his initial appearance and was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center, held without bond and waiting extradition to Florida.
Arrested: Alexander Geovanni Fonseca Age: 19 of Miami, Florida
Charges: Theft $1,500-$25,000, Unlawful taking of motor vehicle, Attempted First Degree Assault, Reckless Endangerment, Resisting Arrest, Disorderly Conduct, Destruction of Property, and numerous traffic violations.
