The Office of the State’s Attorney for Allegany County, Michael O. Twigg, State’s Attorney, announced on Wednesday, May 24, that Brandon Simpson, 25 of Cumberland, was convicted and sentenced relating to an assault that took place in Cumberland on October 1, 2016. The Honorable W. Timothy Finan, Administrative Judge of the Circuit Court, sentenced Simpson to 16 years in the Maryland Department of Corrections, suspending eight years of the sentence. Upon his release, as part of his five year probation, Simpson will have to undergo treatment and testing for substance abuse issues.
On October 1, 2016, Cumberland City Police responded to a residence on Eastern Avenue in the city. Upon arrival, police learned that Simpson, who was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time, had confronted a woman as she attempted to enter her home, and assaulted her. Simpson, who was present at the scene, resisted arrest and assaulted an officer as well.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorney Erich Bean. Mr. Simpson was represented by James Elliott of the Public Defender’s Office.
