WCBC has now confirmed through several sources that at least 50 employees have been furloughed from the mechanical/back shop at CSX Cumberland.
We're told that about 200 work in that shop locally, so the number of layoffs is about 25% of that department here.
The layoffs reportedly took place as workers arrived for the 3 PM shift. Eyewitnesses say there were four railroad policemen in attendance to provide security.
7:30 PM UPDATE: Sources tell WCBC News that most of the layoffs are of utility workers and car men, along with a lesser number of pipefitters, electricians and machinists.
This is a developing story and we will continue to report details as they become available.
