Deputy State Fire Marshals are continuing their investigation into the origin and cause of a fire causing Ronald Eugene Metz (43) to receive smoke inhalation and thermal burn injuries to his face, arms, hands and feet. He was treated at the scene and transported by Maryland State Police helicopter to Johns Hopkins Bayview Burn Center in critical but stable condition. Attentive neighbors located the victim outside of the structure and rendered initial aid. The 9:02 p.m. blaze required nearly 25 firefighters from Oldtown and neighboring volunteer fire departments to contain the blaze within approximately 20 minutes. The single-story wood framed dwelling located on Lower Town Creek Road in Oldtown was fully involved with fire upon arrival at the scene. One firefighter received a leg injury and was treated at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center and released. It is currently unknown if smoke alarms were operational at the time of the incident. Damage estimates to the structure and contents are $75,000.
