County School Enrollment Decline Not as Significant As Previously Thought

Enrollment in the Allegany County Public School system continues to decline- although the numbers are not as bad as originally thought.  At the Board of Education’s October meeting,  the total student count stood at 65 below last year- however the numbers are not official and show a decline of just over 16. The Maryland State Department of Education requires each county school district to report total enrollment by Sept. 30 each year.  Admission numbers are important because state funding is largely based on enrollment.  David Cox, Allegany County superintendent of schools, gave a presentation on enrollment at Tuesday’s regular meeting of the Allegany County Board of Education and said that losing just 16 students will have a minimal impact on education funding received from the state and county…
