A scholarship funded by county revenues from Rocky Gap Casino Resort is helping more than 300 students with their educations at Allegany College of Maryland and Frostburg State University, according to college and university officials. At two recent meetings, Allegany County Commissioners have said they’re pleased with how the program is helping students. Allegany County Commissioner Bill Valentine told WCBC News the scholarships will help students avoid large loan payments At ACM, the foundation that grants scholarships created four categories for the Allegany County Opportunity Scholarship — Merit Scholarship, Tuition Subsidy for Credit Students, a “Jump Start” Early College Scholarship, and a Continuing Education and Workforce Development Scholarship. Scholarships have already been awarded in the first three programs, with additional scholarships scheduled for the fourth this fall, according to college officials.
