The state has brought its recruiting blitz to Cumberland on this weekend in an effort to hire new correctional officers. DPSC Secretary Stephen Moyer is leading the recruiting which began Friday and continues today from 8 a.m. to noon at Allegany College of Maryland. The event will be held in the Continuing Education Building at 12401 Willowbrook Road in Cumberland and will allow candidates to apply and test on the same day. The department held a similar push down on the Eastern Shore last month and will do the same in Hagerstown next month in an effort to reduce an officer shortage. Correctional officers earn a starting salary of close to $40,000 a year and can rise to $54,200 before promotion. The job comes with the ability to retire after 20 years in addition to excellent health and retirement benefits.
