The Allegany County Commissioners will be providing an estimated one million dollars to help repair and secure a section of the Great Allegheny Passage that was damaged by a landslide in February. That event forced the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad to cancel the Frostburg end of its daily train excursions for the year. The railroad is working with Allegany County, the Maryland Bureau of Mines and Hilles-Carnes Engineering Associates to come up with a plan to remedy the landslide problem, which will include the addition of a retaining wall. The slope and unstable embankment have made the area impassable. County Commissioner Bill Valentine says repairing the retaining wall is really a safety issue that has to be addressed….
