Commissioners Request Liquor Law Be Amended

The Allegany County commissioners formally requested state lawmakers to amend current rules, including those that ban Sunday alcohol sales, during the 2016 General Assembly session. Allegany is among few counties in Maryland under a blue law, which prohibits package store sales of alcohol on Sundays. The commissioners also are looking for an earlier serving time at local restaurants. Now, Allegany County restaurants aren't allowed to serve alcohol before 1 p.m. on Sunday. Commissioners will request that time change to 11 a.m. A final request focuses on the age limit for workers who serve spirits to be 18. Currently, employees 18 to 20 years old may only serve beer and wine. The proposed modification would allow servers over age 18 to serve a variety of alcohol. After having received input by way of surveys conducted by the local liquor board, the commissioners signed off on a letter to the district one delegation asking that those bills be introduced.
