The Allegany County Commissioners took action this month to adopt a code designed to establish a more equitable distribution of funding for the county’s fire and rescue departments. There have been questions about allocation and placement of resources and coverage areas- also of concern is the fact that the county system is not manned 24/7. Allegany County has 13 ambulance services, eight of them fire/EMS, while four are EMS only and one — Cumberland — is a paid department. Allegany County Emergency Service director Dick Devore has been working with the volunteer departments and the city in the past year to create a new system.
