On February 3, 2020, the Cumberland Police served Arrest Warrants on Tahara Smith, age 31 of Cumberland, and Rusty Chappelle, age 35 of Cumberland. The Warrants stemmed from a February 2, 2020 incident where officers responded to a residence on Lamont Street for an assault complaint. When officers arrived they located Tahara Smith and Rusty Chappelle both with visible injuries. Both Chappelle and Smith provided officers different accounts to what had occurred prior to their arrival. However, they both indicated that they had been in a physical altercation with each other. Officers further learned that there was an active Peace Order keeping Smith from contacting Chappelle. An Application for Charges was filed in District Court on both Chappelle and Smith. An Arrest Warrant was issued for Smith charging her with assault 2nd degree, disorderly conduct, and two counts of failing to comply with a Peace Order. An Arrest Warrant was also issued for Chappelle charging her with two counts of assault 2nd degree, and disorderly conduct. Following their Initial Appearances in District Court, Smith was released on her own recognizance, and Chappelle was held without bond.
