UPDATED 2:00 PM – Via Cumberland Councilman Seth Bernard: "To clarify, the City's Parks and Recreation Board is recommending we move forward with the Skate Plaza on a DIFFERENT piece of land in Constitution Park (The now-wooded piece of land behind the amphitheater, that also borders WMHS's Community Garden."
The City of Cumberland is moving forward with plans for a skateboard park at Constitution Park at the location that for years served to showcase a train caboose, an airplane, a fire engine and a tank. Those items have been relocated. Mayor Brian Grim announced last year that the movement of the attractions is to make way for a new skateboard plaza that is to be built along the hill where the attractions currently are.
As is usually the case, support for the project isn’t unanimous. City resident Kenneth Wilmot, noting that there was a fatal accident several years ago when a skateboard park was opened across from the new YMCA on Kelly Road, said he would hate to see a similar incident at a Cumberland park…
