With rumors circulating that the city of Cumberland’s negotiations with CSX Transportation would include permanently closing the Washington Street bridge- a standing room only crowd packed City Hall Tuesday night in protest. The meeting began with the City Council taking action to approve an interim agreement with CSX that would see ownership of the Cumberland Street bridge accepted by the city; a temporary or perhaps permanent bridge constructed for access on the West Side; and acknowledgement that the two sides would continue talks on a wide range of possible solutions to the West Side bridge issues.
