City Council Receives Neighborhood Blight Update

July 8th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

The Cumberland Mayor and City Council Tuesday received an update from staff regarding efforts to address blight and neighborhood revitalization. Director of Administrative Services Ken Tressler outlined the findings of a recent inventory of city properties with the numbers showing more than 500 locations identified as blighted. The data collected also notes more than 100 properties on the tax sale list; and identifies dozens of negligent property owners. Cumberland Mayor Ray Morriss says this report will provide the city with a foundation to begin addressing serious blight issues as well as working toward rehabilitating some of the structures if possible…

      > True that. But I think a good idea would be to tear down the ones beyond repair and turn the empty lots into mini-parks and off street parking, which is badly needed. That would improve the value of the existing homes and offset the property tax loss, while adding to the quality of the neighborhood. But the city would rather just raise taxes on the existing ghetto because they’re dimbulb fools.

500 seems like a lot in a small town like C-Land. And that’s after they’ve torn down a couple dozen over in Rolling Mills. Looks like things are going well over there. What’s it been – 4 or 5 years now?

        > Actually the 500 is thought to be a conservative estimate. And as one who travels often through town I’d agree. Some streets I’ve been on have at least every third house either abandoned or badly deteriorated. Looking like Detroit after the auto industry left. Even out of town slum lord investors are walking away!!
