City Council Presented With Recommendations To Improve Downtown Parking Situation

In an effort designed to generate additional revenue for the city while at the same time improving the downtown parking situation- Community Development Programs Manager Kathy McKenney presented a number of recommendations to the city council Tuesday to improve the Center City Parking Garage on George Street. The garage, which opened in 1975, has 338 total spaces on five levels- but approximately 170 spaces routinely vacant. This despite constant complaints of a lack of adequate parking in the city. The proposed improvements include updating the signage, interior and exterior; creating a ground level consisting of handicap spaces; spaces for city vehicles and a number of premium priced spaces. Sandi Saville, chair of the Downtown Development Commission, believes the changes would create a more conisistent revenue stream for the city- as well as increasing the daily usage of the garage…
