Significant changes are coming in the way Allegany County’s economic development operations function- with preliminary plans in the talking stages that could see the county absorb the Cumberland Economic Development Corporation. The county’s economic development chief has been away for sometime as a result of an illness- and the overall effort has been subject to some scrutiny and public debate in recent months. Commissioners President Jake Shade, during a meeting in May, questioned whether the county department needed an overhaul. Since that time, Shade; Cumberland Mayor Ray Morriss; CEDC executive director Paul Kelly, and other officials have begun to study a new structure- looking to create a more unified, cohesive plan for business retention and attraction.
