David Winner, a former Player of the Year and All-Area first-teamer who helped Valley High School to a pair of basketball state championships, has been named the head varsity girls coach for Bishop Walsh Spartan Basketball, according to BW Principal Ray Kiddy. Winner, of Westernport, has 15 years of experience, having coached boys basketball, girls basketball and softball at local high schools including Mount Savage, Bishop Walsh and Mountain Ridge. A former standout at Valley, Winner was the 1981 Times-News Player of the Year and first-team All-Area in 1981. During his high school career, he played on the 1979 and 1981 Maryland Class C state championship teams. He played for Coach Bob Kirk at Allegany College in 1982 and 1983, and continued his career at Alfred (N.Y.) University, playing for Coach Ron Frederes. He graduated from Alfred with a degree in political science.
