Garrett County native Brandon Butler, currently employed at the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing & Regulation, is expected to be named the new Allegany County Administrator tomorrow (Thursday). Butler, will continue in his job as deputy assistant secretary in the Division of Workforce Development and Adult Learning through February, and then will replace administrator David Eberly who will be retiring from the position at the end of April. Some of those asked to comment on the county’s choice point to Butler’s relative youth and lack of county government experience as a negative- however Delegate Wendell Beitzel said he believes the commissioners have made an excellent choice…
While not having worked in local government, Butler has a diverse background. In addition to having a law degree, Butler managed a family owned auto business and worked briefly for the Greenwill Consulting Group, a bi-partisan boutique government relations firm in Annapolis. He also served as a legislative assistant to both Beitzel and State Senator George Edwards before landing his current position in state government. The Commissioners have received some criticism for the process used in selecting Butler, advertising only in the Cumberland Times News, and only after two of the three commissioners indicated that an individual to fill the job had already been decided upon.
