The Allegany County Board of Education, during this month’s regular meeting, voted to approve the fiscal 2021 superintendent’s $116 million operating budget. Chief Financial Officer Larry McKenzie provided an overview of the financial plan which will be presented publicly to the Allegany County Commissioners for consideration later this month. Saying that the budget is very much “people driven” McKenzie noted that the largest portion of the budget by far- close to $68 million- is targeted to go toward salaries and wages. While this request exceeds last year’s budget- McKenzie points out that the local board must rely on the state and the county to provide those extra dollars- as the school system does not have the ability to generate revenue…
