BoE Proposed Budget Unlikely To Contain Hire Of New Teachers

When the Allegany County Board of Education presents its proposed budget to the County Commissioners at a public hearing next week- in all likelihood that budget will not include the hire of five new teachers as had been recommended by the superintendent. Directed by the board to reduce student class size and the student to teacher ratio- Superintendent David Cox presented a proposed budget that called for those additional hires at an estimated cost of $300,000. When the budget came to the board for consideration last week- the board voted 3-2 to remove the new teachers. Board President Robert Farrell, pointing to a steady decline in student enrollment, said he believes it would be unfair to submit a budget to the county which calls for more than $1.5 million above last years allocation…

 

The county commissioners won’t be officially notifying the board of how much funding will be made available for education until sometime in late April or early May. Until that time, board member Deb Frank said there is not reason to start making cuts…
