Mayor Catherine Pugh and Park Heights residents are rallying to keep the Preakness in Baltimore. WBAL reports that effort included a stop in Annapolis where there are two competing pieces of legislation. As of now, the Preakness will run in Baltimore in 2019 and 2020, but after that things are up in the air. But if you read between the lines, it seems the Stronach Group, which owns Pimlico, is leaning toward moving to Laurel. The residents rallied together to keep the second jewel in horse racing's Triple Crown from leaving Baltimore City- with frustrations growing as law makers are considering two bills: One to create a work group to rebuild Pimlico and another to grant millions of dollars in bonds to invest in Laurel Park. The mayor says she wants to see negotiations continue but notes that seeing the Preakness leave Baltimore would be a non starter for those talks…

The average age of horse racing fans is dead. Seriously. No one goes to horseraces because they have other forms of gambling. The track at Charlestown is nice but there is never a crowd watching the races – it exists as cover for the slots. Md. wants the Preakness to stay alive – it won’t in a track that is only open 16 days a year. Merge the days with Laurel and move on. Pimlico is a lost cause. Putting more public money in it is ridiculous.

The City has had 40 years to do something with the track and the surrounding area. Now they want the State tax payers to fix the problems and courts to tell the owners what they can and can’t do with their private property. Sounds about right for down there.
The City of Baltimore wants economic development in the Pimlico area right? How about if we kill several birds with one stone. …level the place and build a nice new shinny prison. The public works project will create jobs for all those under employees folks, it would be a neighborhood beautification project, and we can address Del Buckle’s issue of making sure all the long term guests of the DOC they are released back from where they came.
