Allegany College realizes increase in Continuing Ed and Workforce Programs

September 28th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

The Center for Continuing Education and Workforce Development at Allegany College of Maryland saw a 20% increase in its fiscal year 2018 requests to the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) for funding based on its course offerings and enrollments.

“Seeing growth is overwhelmingly positive because it takes into account a variety of factors, from required program hours to class size,” explained ACM Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD) Dean Jeff Kirk. “But behind the calculations, what’s most important is that individuals are getting the classes and training they need which results in a stronger regional workforce.”

The College reported 12,805 registrations for 1,287 continuing education courses in fiscal year 2018, including over 200 new courses approved for funding through MHEC.

CEWD administers a number of programs, including: adult education, health and human services, career and employer solutions, workforce development and training, community services and the Western MD IT Center for Excellence.

Many of ACM’s programs are compressed to ensure workplace readiness within a short period of time. For example, its EXCELerate pathway training program prepares individuals for entry-level employment in the regional IT field in two condensed semesters. Upon completion, students may immediately enter the workforce or articulate their EXCELerate coursework into college credits towards a one-year Certificate or an Associate’s degree in Computer Science.
