On January 12, 2017, the Cumberland Police Department recognized Scott Dabbs and Patrolman Alan Zapf for the heroism they displayed during a fire call in the 600 block of Maryland Avenue on December 1, 2016. During this incident, Patrolman Zapf was on patrol when he discovered a residence on fire. Patrolman Zapf with the help of a neighbor, Scott Dabbs, entered the burning residence and evacuated two occupants to safety. A Great Dane dog and several puppies perished in the fire.
