The Cumberland City Council recently made a proclamation recognizing June 15th as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. WEAAD was officially recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2011, following a request by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse, who first established the commemoration in June 2006. According to the US Department of Justice, only one in 24 cases of elder abuse is ever reported, suggesting that public awareness remains a critical need in the fight against elder abuse.
