West Virginia is leading the nation as the first state to implement statewide protocols for administering whole blood transfusions on ambulances.
Since the program launched in November of 2023, Cabell County EMS has provided the most transfusions in the field and Harrison County began the practice in March. Secretary of West Virginia’s Department of Health Dr. Sherri Young says the whole blood transfusions have proven to increase the chances of survival…
"This is providing essential care for trauma patients and other emergencies that otherwise may not have made it to the hospital to receive care. It's absolutely life-changing and life-saving by quickly restoring the blood volume and enhancing the clotting function."
