The Allegany Museum was recently awarded a Maryland Humanities Voices and Votes Electoral Support Grant to be used to support the museum’s April 19 – May 19 traveling Smithsonian display. This rotating exhibit is based on the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History democracy display and features historical photos, educational and archival video; engaging multimedia, photos, and information; and historical objects like campaign souvenirs, voter memorabilia, and protest material.
As a prelude to the exhibit at the Allegany Museum, community artifacts scanning events will be held from 9 am to 3pm at Frostburg State University’s Lewis J. Ort Library on February 19, and at the Allegany Museum on February 20. The community is requested to provide local area documents, photos, banners, and signage pertaining to area protests that will be scanned and used in this, and/or future exhibits and displays.
Allegany College of Maryland will hold a scanning event which will be focused primarily on the Women’s Suffrage movement and the college is requesting that documents, photos, articles related to the history of voting and women’s suffrage and civil rights in Allegany County and the surrounding area be brought to the ACM Library from 11 am – 5pm on March 13.
Voices and Votes: Democracy in America is part of the Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and state humanities councils. Support for Museum on Main Street has been provided by the United States Congress.
The Allegany Museum is a regional history museum located at 3 Pershing Street in Cumberland. The Museum curates, exhibits, and communicates the geographic, cultural, and commercial heritage of the Allegany area of the Appalachia region.
