Van Hollen Introduces “Polluters Pay” Legislation

September 16th, 2024 by WCBC Radio

U.S. Senator from Maryland, Chris Van Hollen is introducing legislation that will collect funds from polluters he says are fueling the climate crisis. The Polluters Pay Climate Act would require polluters to provide financially to address impacts of climate change…

“Under this plan, the biggest U.S. based fossil fuel extractors and oil refiners, as well as foreign owned companies doing business in the United States would be on the hook to pay into a one trillion dollar polluter-pay climate fund.”

Van Hollen noted that climate change is worsening and having an affect both worldwide and in Maryland…

“We are witnessing the accelerating costs of climate change. The damages are caused by a variety of man-made pollution, greenhouse gas emissions. In the state of Maryland, we’ve got flooding in Annapolis that is disrupting small businesses. We have flooding that is disrupting the Naval Academy.”
