June 21st, 2018 by WCBC Radio

OnThursday at 1121am the Allegany County Emergency Operations Center received numerous phone calls that a train had struck several bridges on the West Side of Cumberland. Officers with the Cumberland Police Dept responded to the area to learn that the Fayette Street and Washington Street bridges suffered damage as a result of an oversized train striking the bridges. At this time Fayette Street, Cumberland Street and Washington Street are all closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic at the bridges in both directions. Motorists are asked to avoid this area and to find an alternative route to their residences at this time. CSX as well as engineers from the City of Cumberland are on the scene at this time. The trains were not hauling any hazardous materials and there is no danger to the public. As a result, Cumberland Mayor Brian Grim tells WCBC News that he is calling for an emergency meeting with CSX representatives calling this latest incident a case of negligence
