Pastor David Ziler works on a daily basis to change the mindset of those who attend the Union Rescue Mission. He says the general public has a middle-class mindset that his clients are not accustomed to living in and prevents them from long-term planning…
“The way they see the world – they need food today. They need to eat today, they need security today and we’re asking them to “oh well, just go pull yourself up by your bootstraps and go to work. How can we expect them to do that because they don’t see the world that way. They’re trying to meet their need today, not a need a month from now.”
This short-term mindset affects all of their decisions. They are more focused on people because of inconsistent living experiences…
“You ask them and the only thing that motivates them is relationship and that’s because most of them have never had consistent running water, never had consistent housing, never had a car. This generational poverty mindset – they’re not used to having things that middle-class people are used to having.”
