The Cumberland Mayor and City Council made the decision recently to close the CSX Underpass at Baltimore Street indefinitely while its future is contemplated. The Underpass has existed there since 1903, but its condition has denigrated to the point people are fearful of using it. Cumberland Citizen Michael Mudge spoke to the council, encouraging them to refurbish and reopen the pathway under the tracks…

“I like the idea that over at the Western Maryland station, the underpass there is blocked off by iron gates and it’s only opened when it’s to be used. And I think if we could add gates to the structure of the staircases there we could have it open only from dawn to dusk.”
