After years of legal battles with PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and having to essentially shut down for the pandemic- the Tri-State Zoological Park will close its doors permanently a month from today- October 2nd. Zoo owner Bob Candy told the Cumberland Times News he has been looking to close for about a year. The zoo officially opened to the public in June 2003- and featured mostly rescue animals. For the past several years Candy and the zoo have been a target of PETA- embroiled in legal battles with the group claiming the animals were mistreated and neglected. For his part Candy maintained that PETA’s claims were unfounded – and he seldom attempted to hide his disdain for the group…
As part of an agreement between the two parties, the rescue animals at the zoo will be going back to their owners by Sept. 8 and PETA will take animals owned by the zoo and move them to facilities across the country by Oct. 20.
