Traffic Stop Leads to Multi-State Pursuit and Felony Arrest

February 25th, 2025 by WCBC Radio

On February 24, 2025, Allegany County Sheriff’s Office Deputies initiated a traffic stop on Route 36, in Lonaconing, where the driver, later identified as Jahare Bishop Steglich (27 y/o male of Silver Spring MD), refused to comply with the traffic stop and provided false information to include his name. When deputies attempted to remove Steglich from the vehicle, he grabbed hold of a deputy and accelerated his vehicle, injuring the deputy in the process. Steglich then fled south bound at a high rate of speed. Deputies pursued Steglich south on Route 36 and relayed this information to West Virginia Law Enforcement. Steglich continued into Piedmont, West Virginia where it was turned over and West Virginia Law Enforcement then pursued the vehicle.

Mineral County Sheriff's Office Deputies, along with Keyser City Police Officers, stopped the vehicle in the area of Keyser West Virginia, where officers were able to disable it. Steglich was taken into custody.

A records check revealed Steglich had multiple active felony warrants in Virginia and Maryland, including charges for Grand Larceny, Identity Theft, and Fraud. He now faces additional charges related to the fleeing and assault in Maryland as well as West Virginia.

The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office extends its gratitude to all assisting agencies for their coordinated response and professionalism.
