The Three Mile Island nuclear reactors sitting in the middle of the Susquehanna River have been idle since 2019 when reactor one was taken out of service. More famously, reactor two had a partial nuclear meltdown in 1979 causing its shutdown. Now Constellation Energy and Microsoft want to restart Unit One to help provide power for Microsoft’s data centers. Constellation Energy spokesman Dave Marcheskie says he can understand concerns of those in the area of the reactor…
“People who were here in 1979 – it was a huge impact to them, to their lives. And that was Unit 2. We’re here to talk about Unit 1 – and that plant ran for 40 years. It had a stellar record of performance and safety. We’re going to have clean energy go back to the grid and Microsoft is going to buy that energy. All of this at zero – zero cost to taxpayers”
