Saturday's scheduled Maryland game against Michigan State has been canceled and all team activities have been paused due to concerns over COVID-19.
The Big Ten Conference requires all student-athletes and football staff to undergo daily antigen testing. Between Dec. 10 and 16, 15 student-athletes have tested positive for COVID-19. Tests conducted Thursday morning revealed three more presumptive cases, with confirmatory PCR tests pending. There were six cases among staff over that same period.
All individuals who tested positive are in isolation, Terps officials said.
“This has been a season of promise and of adversity,” head coach Michael Locksley said in a statement. “Our team has demonstrated a tremendous work ethic, resolve and displayed Maryland pride throughout this unique season. We have battled two opponents each week, the team we matched up with on the field and COVID. Together, we experienced tremendous highs and we are deeply disappointed that we will not be able to test ourselves on the field against Michigan State.”
The Michigan State game had been postponed from Nov. 21. It is the third Maryland (2-3) game to have been canceled due to coronavirus outbreaks on one side or the other.
Between Nov. 10 and Dec. 14, the university conducted 2,340 on-campus COVID-19 tests. A total of 36 student-athletes have tested positive.
