Supreme Court Decision Impacts City

June 29th, 2024 by WCBC Radio

Friday’s U.S. Supreme Court decision  upheld bans on homeless encampments, saying such laws do not amount to cruel and unusual punishment under the 8th Amendment.  That gives local jurisdictions like Cumberland rights to set their own policies for homelessness.

City police began enforcement early Saturday morning.

On Saturday June 29th, 2024 at approximately 12:17am, officers of the Cumberland Police Department conducted a foot patrol in the area of George Washington Headquarters. Upon their patrol they observed several individuals to be trespassing in the parklet. Rodney McCarty Jr, Joseph Wood, and Michael Wallace were all observed to be trespassing. They were all issued a Criminal Citation for trespassing, and were released pending their trial at District Court.

Arrest: Michael Allen Wallace, age 43, Cumberland Maryland.

Charge: Trespassing.

Arrest: Joseph William Wood, age 45, Cumberland Maryland.

Arrest: Rodney Michael McCarty Jr, age 29, Cumberland Maryland.
