The State of Maryland will soon be acting on the recommendations of a study hoping to modernize the state personnel hiring system. Governor Wes Moore had made a promise to hire over 5,000 employees to fill vacancies across state agencies. A year later, less than 1000 have been hired. The Maryland General Assembly asked for a task force to review and streamline state hiring practices. Recommendations from the task force include updating job titles, improving applicant engagement through the hiring process, and considering the creation of dedicated staff to take ownership of hiring. Currently, it takes an average of four months for a state position to be filled.
