Work is beginning on eastbound Interstate 68 to upgrade highway signage directed at trucks moving through the area. It is the latest attempt by the state to slow down tractor trailer traffic coming down from the Finzel weigh station. SHA Spokesman Charlie Gischlar told WCBC that the updates include new technology…
“The use of Intelligent Transportation Systems for the overhead signs. There will be sensors ahead, using radar technology that will test the vehicles for the speed depending on the gradient of the mountainous areas along I-68. And then a beacon will flash on that sign indicating the vehicle is over the posted speed limit.
SHA had chosen eastbound I-68 because of the number of tractor-trailer incidents…
“Because of the steep mountain grades there, we’ve had our fair share of rollover vehicles with commercial vehicles because they were going over the posted speed limit, too fast for the grades on the mountain. And when that happens, it generally will close the road for hours and hours until they can right it, pull it off to the side, offload everything, and open up the lane.”
