State Highway Grants for Pedestrian/Bicyclist Safety

July 14th, 2023 by WCBC Radio

Governor Wes Moore’s office has announced nearly $1 million in state highway safety grants to organizations and law enforcement agencies to promote pedestrian and bicyclist safety. The Governor says these grants are instrumental in building a transportation system that works for all Marylanders, keeping safety a top priority while improving access and saving lives.  Maryland’s Vision Zero sets an overall goal of zero fatalities and serious injuries on state roadways by 2030. It serves as a blueprint in the Maryland Strategic Highway Safety plan, a comprehensive approach to reduce highway fatalities by focusing on the Four E’s: education, engineering, enforcement and emergency medical services. In 2022, 563 people were killed on Maryland roadways, including 135 pedestrians and 11 bicyclists. Police reports show increased speed, impairment and low seat belt use as the most common factors in motor vehicle deaths.
