The Maryland State Fire Marshal is urging all citizens to check or install working smoke alarms on every level of homes. 2023 has seen the worst increase in fire deaths in the first quarter of the year than in any time in recent decades. State Fire Marshal Brian Geraci noted that fires burn fast and hot and produce toxic smoke that can kill quickly. Having working alarms in place and an escape plan for occupants is crucial to saving lives. If you do not have a smoke alarm, you can call the local fire department who will install alarms in your home at no charge.
