On Saturday, January 11th, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the 100 block of Sommerville Ave for the report of an assault involving a firearm. Upon arrival, officers were flagged down by individuals outside of the residence. The subjects advised officers that they had been inside the residence with a male subject, known as “SB”. The subjects advised officers that an argument had started inside the home and began to escalate. It was alleged then that the “SB” subject produced an AR-style rifle and threatened to kill the subjects if they did not get out of the home. The victims were then able to leave the home and call 911. Officers then approached the home and were able to safely contact the “SB” subject, identified as Collin James Smith, 21, of Hagerstown MD. Smith advised officers that an argument had occurred in the home, but denied any firearms were involved.
At this time, Smith was placed under arrest and transported for processing. After obtaining a signed Search Warrant for a search of the residence, a loaded AR-style rifle was located inside. Further investigation also revealed that Smith was prohibited from owning or possessing any firearms due to previous convictions on similar charges in both Maryland and Louisiana. Smith was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. He is currently being held without bond. The Cumberland Police Department was also assisted in the investigation by members of the Combined County Criminal Investigation (C3I) Unit and the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office.
