Most residents in Spencerville, Maryland had already gone to bed when they felt the slight shaking of an earthquake under their homes.
A 1.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Montgomery County town between 11:15 and 11:30pm Monday night. The United States Geological Survey confirmed the quake to be a little over 3 miles down into the earth.
No damages or injuries were reported but the USGS received calls from Laurel, Columbia, and Ellicott City from those who felt the rumble.
