On Thursday, November 7th, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department responded to the area of Second St and Seymour St for the report of a suspicious male in a vehicle. Upon arrival, officer located a male passed out in a Honda passenger vehicle. Officers observed that the vehicle was running and in gear, and also observed suspected CDS inside the vehicle. Officers then awakened the driver and placed the car in park. The driver was then identified as Joseph Robert Benson III, 40, of Cumberland MD. Benson was then ordered to exit the vehicle to continue the investigation. At that time, he attempted to quickly place the vehicle in drive in an attempt to allude the officers. After a brief struggle, Benson was able to be removed from the vehicle and placed into custody. Benson was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. He is currently being held on a temporary commitment.
