An update on the city of Cumberland Security camera system was provided during Thursday's public work session at City Hall. Matt Miller, Executive Director of the Cumberland Economic Development Corporation, says the $235,000 project funded by grants is currently in its third phase of installation. 42 cameras viewing downtown are now in operation and a new $47,000 mobile security camera system will be provided to the Cumberland Police Department just in time for Christmas. 4 PTZ (pan tilt zoom) cameras mounted on a telescoping mast with additional perimeter cameras, a two-way speaker so that officers can remotely communicate with those around the platform and powered by battery or solar power on a mobile trailer are mong improvements. The system can be linked remotely to the police headquarters for monitoring as well as an officer on duty through an app on a phone. A recent crime study conducted by the Cumberland Police Department shows a 12% decrease in crime and vandalism in the downtown area since the camera system went online.
