Five years in the planning, the official groundbreaking for the Cumberland Gateway project is set for this Friday afternoon. The proposed commercial plaza, commonly referred to as the Rolling Mill project, will occupy space off eastbound Interstate 68 at Exit 43D between Maryland Avenue and Park Street, and is expected to include a hotel, restaurants, a convenience store and shops. The project has not been without controversy however as a handful of homeowners in the affected area have refused to sell, leading the city and the developer to move forward with a “build-around” solution. The hope remains that ultimately all of the properties can be secured. The Cumberland Economic Development Corporation is overseeing the project.
