Many travelers over the upcoming Labor Day holiday will be taking their dogs with them on vacation. Many dogs enjoy road trips, but if the dog is not used to being in the car, there may be issues according to Brian Moody of AutoTrader. He spoke to WCBC recently about why some dogs don’t do well in cars…
“One of the reasons dogs might not like being in the car, is because they associate the car with something negative, meaning you only ever put them in the car to go to the vet They are going to get shots, they are going to get poked and prodded, so they associate the car with something bad.”
When traveling with pets, it is always best to have them crated or belted in the car and to have fresh water available for them. Moody says there are two major “don’ts” when you have your pet in the car – hanging their head out the window and leaving them in a vehicle unattended…
“Stick their head out the window while the car is moving is dangerous for the dog, All its going to take is for there to be a bug, a rock, a bolt falls off some truck and your dog could be seriously hurt. So, that’s not the safest thing to do. Along with don’t leave your dog alone in the car especially when it’s hot outside. Those are two pretty big don’ts.”
