Celina Smith of Cumberland continues to cling to life in a UPMC Pittsburgh hospital. While previous reports on social media and newspaper indicated that she had passed away she remains on a ventilator. Hospital staff are prepare her for organ donation later this week.
WCBC News spoke to her husband Sean Smith about the difficult times his family is currently experiencing not only with this tragedy but also with others trying to profi from the incident. Efforts to raise money through Facebook, GoFundMe and local cookie sale under the name Hewlin family are not going towards the Smith family or the cost of her cremation.
Mr Smith said if you would like to donate and assist with funeral costs and transporting Celina home to please make a donation at the The Addams Family Funeral Home on Decatur Street directly.
On June 30, 2024, at 1:44 AM, the Cumberland Police Department responded to a report of an injured woman in the area of West Oldtown Road. Upon investigation, it was discovered that the victim, 38-year-old Celina Smith of Cumberland, had been shot.uA subsequent investigation by the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit and the Cumberland Police involved interviewing numerous witnesses, gathering evidence, and executing search warrants throughout the area. As a result of the investigation, information was gathered identifying Kaleb Jas York, age 18, of Cumberland as a suspect in this matter. On July 9, 2024, Kaleb York was arrested and charged with attempted murder, felony assault, and reckless endangerment in connection with this case. Kaleb York is currently being held in the Allegany County Detention Center without bond.
